Introduction

In this rotation I worked with Saurabh Pauls on an experiment started in the first rotation by Andrés Cimmarusti. We investigated a technique for lazer stabalization using the spectrum of Ytterbium in a cathode discharge lamp.

The problem with using atoms in a cathode lamp is that the spectral lines will be broadened. The two main sources of broadening are Doppler broadening and Pressure broadening. I will give an estimate of the magnitude of the broadening and simulate the spectrum that we expect to see. I will then compare the simulation of the spectra with experimental results.
